Richard Ashcroft is a philosopher working in the field of bioethics. He trained in mathematics, history and philosophy of science, and has been working in medical ethics for nearly 20 years. He has taught extensively in medical schools, but now teaches in a law school.

His main research interests are in the ethics of medical research, and ethical aspects of public health and health promotion. He also has personal and professional interests in utopias and in learning disability, especially autism.

It is his interest in autism (as a parent of a child with ASD) which focuses his interest in the nature of ‘the good life’, and ways in which public policy and social contexts can shape or inhibit the good life for autistic people and their families.
