Benjamin Tallis

Currently working as a freelance writer, commentator and activist, Tallis draws on experience as a political and strategic advisor and analyst for the European Union and OSCE to focus on encouraging critical engagement with and interrogation of contemporary societies, governance and interactions.

Building on experience in the public and private sectors, especially in Central and Eastern Europe, Tallis has pursued various forms of engagement and action for change in this ‘transitional’ region and beyond. Informed by time in international and local communities in the Balkans, former Soviet Union and Mitteleuropa, Tallis has drawn attention to the challenges raised by the surrender to post-political politicking and banal consensus in the aftermath of the end of history, the rise of security-based governance and attempts to marketise all areas of life.

Tallis highlights the need to reinvigorate democracy (now!), learning the lessons of post-modern critiques in order to revive the possibilities for solidarity. To this end Tallis focuses primarily on the emancipatory potential of genuine politics and of art beyond the luxury experience economy. Tallis is particularly interested in instigating (and collaborating on) projects that provoke understanding of the forces that act on us globally and locally, publically and privately and provide platforms for interaction and solidarity

He has published articles in a variety of European media outlets including The New Presence, The Prague Post, Flash Art, Umelec and e-politik, and blogs at Beuys Own.

View: 'Turn That Racket Off'

"The Battle of Ideas goes from strength to strength. The intensity, variety and depth of debate, sustained for an entire weekend, makes for a unique experience charging the intellectual batteries for the rest of the year."
