Pete Mercer

Pete Mercer is the vice President Welfare for the National Union of Students leading on issues that are non-academic, including a wide range of issues that affect students’ lives on a day to day basis. This rights based zone includes campaigning for improved wellbeing services, safer student housing and addressing issues around financial support, as well as leading on issues relating to student health, alcohol behaviour, hate speech and inter-faith projects.

After studying English at Newcastle University, Pete was elected the Student Support Officer for two years. He led projects starting the first hall rep system and fighting discrimination against students in the local community. Pete has a passion for community integration and development, including for student parents and those of faith.

Outside of his portfolio, Pete has been involved in several international development projects including within Southern Africa and has a strong affinity with work supporting both human and animal rights.
