2012 Programme: Contemporary Controversies

Too many controversial topics are avoided in today’s ‘safe’ culture. These contemporary controversy panel discussions don’t avoid difficult questions, but rather try to interrogate them. Has multiculturalism really failed or become the new normal? Is not discriminating a failure to judge, an indifference to the relative values of customs and cultures? Or a welcome challenge to a stifling monoculture? Is the Middle East becoming more democratic or less? Do we care enough? Do we care enough about our own, our sick, our elderly? Are we doing enough to combat racism or is it dead and buried? Are we robust enough to allow people to say the unspeakable or scared of shadows?

Are the Germans still European?

"The Battle of Ideas was a great success; it enabled large numbers of people to hear and interact with well-known speakers who have thought about and contributed significantly to the discussions of many important issues."
Richard Swinburne, emeritus professor, philosophy of religion, University of Oxford; author, 'The Existence of God and The Evolution of the Soul'
