Absolutely nothing, Edwin Starr would probably say. Universities were the shock troops of the new “knowledge economy” but today, according to the International Labor Organization, the youth unemployment rate in Portugal is over 35 per cent and it is well over 50 per cent in Greece. This bleak reality is forcing reflection on the role of universities today: can students afford to attend and, even if they can, is it worth it? Universities have argued for decades now that a degree is the key to a better job but, now there are no jobs, do they risk going out of business themselves? Will they become the preserve of a rich elite? Or can the university recover a sense of purpose as institutions devoted to academic study?
