Hamish Meldrum completed his five-year term as Chairman of Council of the BMA in June 2012. He graduated from Edinburgh in 1972 and began his medical career in general medicine, spending 3 years as a medical SHO and medical registrar in Torbay Hospital, Devon, before deciding on a career in general practice, ending up in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, where he was a GP for over thirty years. He was involved in local hospital management and in the Local Medical Committee (LMC) in the 1980s, before joining the General Practitioners Committee (GPC) in 1991. He was chairman of East Yorkshire LMC from 1996-99. Hamish was part of the GPC team that negotiated the new GP contract, was deputy chairman of the GPC from 1999-2004 and its chairman from 2004-2007. He continues to take an active interest in medical politics and is currently a non-executive director of the BMJ publishing group and a member of the audit committee of the RCGP. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners and of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. |
