Lord Sutherland’s House of Lords work includes the Select Committee on Science and Technology, 2003 - 10, serving as Chairman from 2007-10. He is currently Chairing the Select Committee on Affordable Child Care.
His government reports include; Appeal Court Procedure (Scotland) 1995, Care of the Elderly, (1999), SATS Exams (2008) Future of Higher Education in Hong Kong (2003).
He has been the non-executive Chair of FrogEducation specialising in IT in schools since 2013, is a fellow of the British Academy, and Royal Society of Edinburgh (serving as President from 2002-05). He was the President of the Saltire Society from 2002-05, and is currently President of Alzheimer Scotland and Scottish Care.
