Christian Wolmar
writer and broadcaster, former Labour candidate for the London mayoral election

Christian Wolmar is an award-winning and prolific writer and broadcaster, specialising in transport, and is the author of a series of books on railway history. In 2012 he launched a campaign to be the Labour candidate for the 2016 London mayoral election and came fifth out of six candidates.

Previously transport correspondent at The Independent, Christian now writes for a wide variety of publications including The Times and The Guardian – and numerous magazines, such as The Oldie and Public Finance. He has had a fortnightly column in Rail since 1994. Nearly all his material is available on his website.

He has written two books on the London Underground, Down the Tube, an account of the Public Private Partnership (2002) and The Subterranean Railway (2004).  Blood, Iron and Gold, How the Railways Transformed the World was published in 2009 and To the Edge of the World: The Story of the Trans-Siberian Railway in 2013. He is now writing the history of Indian railways.

Christian was on the board of trustees of the Railway Children charity for eight years from 1995.  He has three children and lives in London.
