Steven Walter

Born in 1986 in Stuttgart/Germany, Steven started playing the cello at the age of eight in the class of the renown cello pedagogue Ekkehard Hessenbruch. After winning several youth music competitions, Steven Walter was member of the State Youth Orchestra, in which he also was first solo-cellist for several years. From 2007-2009 he lived in Norway, first studying with Geir Tore Larsen and then taking up official studies with Bjorn Solum at the Barratt-Due Musikkinstutt in Oslo.

Steven has performed as soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe and has received invitations to numerous international Festivals, where he has performed with such names as Dora Schwarzberg and Gavriel Lipkind. He has participated in many CD and broadcast recordings, e.g. with the Oslo Camerata. In 2008, a duo-recital in Belgrade was recorded and broadcasted by the Serbian Nationalradio.

From April 2010 he continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold in the class of Prof. Xenia Jankovic. Steven also takes regular masterclasses with Jakob Kullberg, Gavriel Lipkind and Valter Despalj.
Steven is a member of the International Mahler Orchestra and the Badische Kammerphilharmonie, where he also is on the advisory board. He is co-founder of the ECP Youth Network. In 2011, he won critical acclaim with his own incidental music to a theater adaption of Oscar Wilde’s “The Picture of Dorian Gray”.

Additionally to his performance career, Steven is a very active cultural entrepreneur. He is founder and artistic & managing director of the PODIUM Festival Esslingen (Germany), a successful European chamber music festival. In recognition of his work as an innovative music promoter he has received a prestigious ECHO Klassik Award in 2010 and was one of three nominees for the title “Cultural Manager of the Year 2011”.
