Mark Borkowski

Mark Borkowski is an acclaimed publicist and agency head, with a 30 year career that spans work in entertainment, arts, consumer PR and beyond. Known for creative, taboo breaking and uncompromising campaigns, Mark has been named by PRWeek as one of the 25 most influential figures in the PR industry along with Tim Bell and Alisdair Campbell, and is in demand as a commentator for the likes of the BBC, CNN and the Financial Times, and a speaker for organisations including Microsoft, Unilever and London 2012 Festival.

Mark made front page news in 2011 with the creation of his new consultancy business, which breaks down the traditional agency model in favour of a network of consultants and collaborators, and currently works with multinational organisations and challenging start ups alike. Past and current clients include American Express, Universal Music Group, the Agent General South Australia, Mikhail Gorbachev, Stomp, Selfridges, Bolshoi Ballet, Amnesty International, Greenpeace, Spotify, Cirque Du Soleil, The Royal Albert Hall, Virgin Media, Sony, Mercedes, Led Zeppelin and Michael Jackson (whom Mark sacked).

Mark has recently become known as much as a media thinker and consultant as a publicist, with two books, The History of the Publicity Stunt and The Fame Formula an insider’s eye on the murky, surprising, funny and sometimes shocking history of the fame industry, to his name and a third on the way. He authored the BBC series How the War was Spun about the use of PR post 9 11 ‘segwaying’ into Iraq misadventure. His recent work has displayed a renewed focus on helping brands behind the scenes, working with them to tool their communications for an unforgiving state of play he terms ‘The Now Economy’. This September he debuted his show Adventure Capitalism, an autobiographical performance lecture outlining the benefits of introducing the Maverick into your life, at Bristol Old Vic as part of the London 2012 Festival.

"The Battle of Ideas is a weekend like no other. I found the 2011 festival immensely stimulating. It gave me a great deal to think about, and a whole new list of books to read - from Virgil to Vygotsky. On to greater battles in 2012!"
