Dr James Treadwell

James Treadwell researches and teaches in the areas of Criminology and Criminal Justice His particular expertise is on topics of violent crime and victimisation. He is the author of the best-selling textbook Criminology (2006) and the revised and updated Criminology: The Essentials (2013). He has published articles in a number of leading academic criminology and criminal justice journals.

Prior to becoming an academic, he worked for the crime reduction charity NACRO, and qualified as a Probation Officer in the West Midlands, working in both adult and youth settings. He was academic advisor on the Howard League Commission into Ex-Military Personnel in Prison.  He is a member of the Advisory Board for ‘No Offence’ and serves as Editorial Advisory board member on The Howard Journal of Criminal Justice and the Journal of Criminal Psychology and also recently given oral evidence to the Justice Select Committee in its first evidence session in the inquiry into draft sentencing guidelines on Burglary and Drug offences.

He is also a regular media commentator and has appeared on television programmes such as BBC1’s The Big Question and The One show, BBC2’s A History of Now, BBC, ITV and Sky News as well as regular appearances on local and national television news and radio programmes outlets discussing crime and justice issues.
