From opera and poetry to blockbuster gallery exhibitions, what is the role of the arts in society today? Are there too many or too few people engaging with them? And do those who engage with the arts do it in the “right” way.

In terms of what is considered art, is anything beyond the pale? From the murderous attacks Charlie Hebdo and the Islamic State’s destruction of antiquities, to boycotts of politically incorrect works, and demands for the removal of public art depicting an array of figures from British colonialists to Confederate generals and Russian revolutionaries, are we entering a new age of intolerance of artistic expression?
