Dr Roba Al-Ghabra

After completing a qualification in medicine, Roba decided to change direction. Her introduction to law was a baptism in fire as she assisted in the ‘ricin’ case helping solicitors at Birnberg Peirce and Partners deal with vulnerable clients, mostly asylum seekers, who were being used to prove the case for going to war in Iraq.

This led her in turn to pursue a career in law and she is now a solicitor specialising in immigration law, dealing with a variety of cases from asylum to applications of entry clearance and assisting those who face deportation.

"The 2006 Battle of Ideas did what it said on the tin: prejudices were punctured, common wisdom was questioned and original thinking honoured. The saying was coined in Texas, but I suggest that the Battle of Ideas adopts it as the conference motto: ‘sacred cows make the best burgers."
