Strand: Battle for Africa

A century ago, world powers were engaged in a frenzied ‘Scramble for Africa’, eager to exploit the continent’s vast natural and human resources. Today, Western politicians, NGOs and even celebrities seem to be engaged in an equally frenzied scramble to ‘save Africa’. Certainly, Africans have suffered terrible famine, disease and war, and it is often argued that the West has a responsibility to atone for colonialism. But can the West be Africa’s saviour, or does today’s scramble reflect Western concerns rather than the real needs and desires of Africans?

The Battle for Africa will be introduced by ‘Dapo Oyewole, executive director, Centre for African Policy & Peace Strategy
