Professor Miguel Seabra

Miguel Seabra, MD, PhD, is President of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), the Portuguese national funding agency for scientific research and development. Before taking up his current role, in January 2012, Miguel Seabra was director of the Centre for Chronic Diseases (CEDOC) at the Medical School of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. He retains Full Professorship at the university, where he coordinates research in Cellular and Molecular Medicine and holds several chairs.

Miguel Seabra is a leading researcher in the field of membrane trafficking and disease, with over 100 papers published in international scientific journals and more than 8,200 citations (h-index - 51). He holds a PhD from Southwestern Medical Center, University of Texas, where he was an Associate Professor, before moving to the Biomedical Science Division of Imperial College Medical School (London) where he became Full Professor and head of unit.
As director of the Gulbenkian PhD Programme in Biomedicine, Miguel Seabra was involved in training of 85 doctoral students in leading international research laboratories. He directly supervised 13 PhD students and 9 post-doctoral researchers.

He is on the editorial boards of several scientific journals, is a member of the European Society for Pigment Cell Research Council, and was a member of review panels in the UK. He is on the Scientific Advisory Boards of several research centres and faculties in Portugal.
